How long are digital nomads allowed to stay in Spain?

Spain's digital nomad visas come with an initial validity of 12 months or for the duration of the employment period if it's shorter than a year. Following your arrival in Spain, you have the option to apply for a three-year residency permit, extendable for an additional two years, providing a total tenure of up to five years.

To maintain the visa, you must not be absent from the country for more than six months per year.

Remote workers can also apply for a residency card, which grants the ability to travel throughout the EU while living in Spain.

Immediate family members, such as children and spouses, have the privilege of accompanying the visa holder to Spain by providing evidence of ample financial resources. For family units comprising two individuals, encompassing the visa holder, an extra 75 per cent of the country's monthly minimum wage (€875/month) is required. An additional 25 per cent (€292) is added for each subsequent family member.

In the event that your spouse or civil partner is included in your application, they are granted the freedom to reside and work in Spain as well.

How to apply for Spain's digital nomad visa.

You can enter Spain on a tourist visa and apply within the first 3 months of you stay.

The application process for Spain's digital nomad visa can be initiated either by applying directly through a consulate or embassy in your home country. Alternatively, you have the option to enter Spain on a tourist visa and submit your application within the initial three months of your stay.

Necessary documentation comprises the completed application form, confirmation of the administrative fee payment, a passport copy, evidence of qualifications or work history, verification of employment and income, confirmation of the company's existence for over a year, an authorization letter from your company to work in Spain, a clear criminal record certificate, and proof of social security coverage.

It's important to note that several of these documents may require translation and the endorsement of relevant officials. Given the novelty of the visa, anticipate potentially prolonged response times.

Do digital nomads get tax breaks in Spain?

Remote workers can pay a reduced tax rate of 15% during the first four years of their stay, provided they earn below €600,000 a year. This is instead of the usual 24%

Anyone who stays in Spain longer than 183 days is considered a tax resident, even if they are working for a foreign company. However, tax benefits are available for digital nomads working and living in the country under the visa scheme.
